The 2017 Oscars are Coming!

This Sunday, February 26th, the televised Oscar ceremony starts at 5:30 p.m. on ABC, and will also stream online at abc.com or on the ABC app. If you’re a movie fan, or celebrity watcher, or a fashion hound, you won’t want to miss it. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, for the first time, the show also promises some political commentary from those at the microphone. Regardless of who the winners are, people will be talking about this show the next day. Some, perhaps, with their hair still on fire.

If you’re planning an Oscar party and have invited some friends over, here are some ideas for what to serve. Since the show starts early enough to have dinner, you probably won’t want to serve only nibbles. Think a tick up from a tailgate party. And remember that people will be glued to the TV, so have enough space for everyone to put a plate or glass down. Unless your TV is perfectly positioned, your guests won’t be sitting around a dining table. They’ll be grabbing whatever seating you have. (Thankfully there are still adults who are happy sitting on the floor.) A buffet is the best idea and gives you a chance to put out whatever you feel like. It doesn’t have to all be part of a theme, and will give you an opportunity to put out an array of food that will appeal to everyone. You can put out a big pot of chili with side plates of chopped onions and grated cheese. You can make a big lasagna (or heat up a frozen one) with a bowl of salad and a cutting board with garlic bread sliced on the bias. You can do the same with a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs. Make sure you have something without meat if anyone in your group is a vegetarian. You can also make, or order in, sandwich platters. Don’t forget the potato salad and coleslaw and pickles. Put out bowls of nuts and a platter with cut up vegetables and maybe a spinach dip? And everyone likes nachos. There’s also the old standby of a cheese plate. Put some apple slices and clumps of grapes around the cheese to make it pretty. You can also put out a bowl of fruit, or a fruit salad. If nothing else, those will pretty up your table. Put out the dessert choices at the same time. Brownies, or cookies, or whatever sounds good to you. Leave everything out until your guests have left. People like to nosh.

What to drink? Believe it or not, champagne goes with everything. And this is a party. (What do you think the Oscar folks are drinking?) You can also put out a full bar, or just beer and soft drinks.
A fun thing to do is hand out ballots to your guests. You can Download Ballot here and print them out. Don’t forget the pencils! You can give prizes to the winners. Anything you like will do. How about a gift certificate to a movie theater in your neighborhood? Or a gift card to Target (who doesn’t shop at Target?) or even a bottle of beribboned wine. Or everything that’s left from the dessert tray? And what about the person who didn’t pick any winners? We’ll leave that prize to you, but having to help clean the kitchen just doesn’t sound fair, does it?

Make sure that your friends who are driving home are sober enough to do it. If some folks had too much fun please make other arrangements for their transportation.

And the winner is....You! Because you just had the best Oscar party ever. Beware. They may expect you to do this again next year.

Happy Valentine's Day from Major Event Trailers

Roses are red...

...violets are blue. You know how this little poem goes. What you might not know is what all of the colors of roses represent. Valentine’s Day seems to almost scream red roses, but you have so many other choices, and each color will say something slightly different to your beloved.

A red rose of course means love. A pink rose is for appreciation or “please believe me”. Yellow can mean joy or gladness or “remember me”. Yellow with a red tip is for falling in love. Orange is for desire or enthusiasm and coral is also for desire. White roses are classic at weddings, and signify purity and innocence. Red and white together mean unity. Red and yellow together are happy feelings. Peach is for appreciation and “closing the deal”. Lavender or a thorn-less rose are love at first sight.

But how many to give? A single rose will express your utmost devotion. (Although you might want to think twice about this if you think it looks a little, um, paltry.) Two roses entwined together say “marry me”. Eleven roses tell your Valentine that she or he is deeply loved. (Of course if your Valentine can count to twelve, there might be a question about where the missing one is, since roses seem to be sold by the dozen.) Thirteen will say that you’re a secret admirer. The killer move will always be to fill a room with flowers, but that seems to take place mostly in the movies.

And don’t forget the chocolate! People have been known to save (empty) Valentine’s Day chocolate boxes for decades because of the emotions attached to them. To read about the History of Chocolate for Valentine’s Day click and read some fun things. And don’t forget that Valentine candy is always on sale the day after. Do with this little fact what you will.

Wish you all the love Valentine’s Day can bring. If this significant day produces a ring… and marriage is in the air, don't flush your love away by renting a port-a-potty for your wedding. Fall in love with our VIP luxury restroom trailers. Our hands-free flushing toilets with vanity sinks and mirrors will make your event extra special.

How Good is Your Palate?

If you’ve ever watched the Food Network Channel, or any other food channels, you’ve probably seen chefs tasting foods... blindfolded. It’s a contest and they’re trying to prove how good their palates are, and to maybe show off a little. You’d be surprised to see how many of the top chefs can’t get all of the foods right. Their surprise seems to be as intense as their embarrassment.

The game goes like this: Put bites of food out and feed them to your blindfolded friends one by one.  Give them a little time to see if they can tell you what they’re eating, and don’t let them touch! Don’t let your other friends watch or hear what’s going on. Let them watch TV or belly up to the bar while each is waiting his or her turn. And give them all the same foods to taste! Once they’ve taken the test and been scored, they can hang around to watch the next victims. Tally the scores and everyone can help when you put the full portions together and make something to eat!

We’re going to give you some examples of what you can use for testing food and then put together to make a great chicken salad. Chicken salad can be a sort of kitchen-sink recipes where everything goes in. Or it can be specific. This one is a little of both.

First, you need the chicken. Either buy one already cooked, or buy pieces and poach them in chicken stock. This doesn’t take long, even if the chicken pieces are frozen. Cut into them to make sure they’re cooked and there’s no pink showing. Chicken, with nothing on it, tastes a little bland. So you can use bites of it in the game. You want it chilled, so once you’ve sliced or shredded or just cut it up, put it in the refrigerator for a little bit.

Chop up some celery. And some raw zucchini. A lot of people won’t guess right on these, either, and then you can toss it all into the salad. Grapes, too.

Ever had a craisin? It’s a dried cranberry and tastes a little like a raisin. They’re very good and will probably stump your guests. It’ll be delicious in the salad.

Chop up bites of apple. Most people will figure this one out, but it’s nice to let them get one or two right. Throw in some walnuts or almonds. Or put both in the game and both, or one, in the salad.
The dressing can be practically anything. Russian, bleu cheese, mayonnaise with lemon, or bottled-whatever-you-find. It doesn’t have to be fancy Russian, just mix mayonnaise with ketchup. Stop adding when it’s a nice pale pink color.

You don’t have to cook anything if you just want to play. Think of foods that will confuse your friends. From cookies to different kinds of pastas. Then you can order in a pizza. And the winner is exempt from cleaning up the mess. Or just gets to go home with bragging rights. This is also a good way to get kids to try to eat something new. They like playing games and they like playing with food. Perfect!
